Negative industrial growth for March
Industrial production decelerated to 4.2 percent in 1997-98, the lowest in the past five years, from 7.1 per cent in 1996-97, primarily due to the poor performance of the manufacturing sector. In March 1998, industrial production registered a negative growth of 0.7 per cent. Production in the manufacturing sector declined by 2.5 per cent. The growth rate in the manufacturing sector fell from 8.6 per cent in 1996-97 to 3.6 per cent in the last fiscal. The only sectors to have done well were power and mining sectors.
