US Congress attempts to limit Indian imports
US importers are opposing an amendment moved by the US Congress to strip India of its most-favoured nation status in textiles and apparel sectors. The amendment to the Defence Authorisation Bill that would affect the $1.8 billion Indian textile and apparel exports was moved by Democrat Congressman Edward Marky. While rejecting the move, Executive Director of USA Importers of Textile and Apparel Laura Jones said the move would lead to imposition of tariffs up to 90 per cent on Indian goods. She said the amendment would violate the terms of the World Trade Organisation to which both India and the US are signatories.
